Fun Car Travel Games

  • Alphabet Game Using Billboards

Game Set Up - Nothing Needed

Game Play - A simple game played many different ways. The basic way is to find a letter of the alphabet in every billboard you pass, each person takes a turn so there is only one billboard per person as you pass them. If there is an "A" then that person has the letter "A" and when it's their turn again they'll look for a "B". The first to get the alphabet done is the winner.

  • Billboard Word Jumble

Game Set Up - Pencils and paper may be needed to play this game.

Game Play - This is a basically a vocabulary game. What happens is that one person will select a word from a passing billboard, usually the longer the better and then everyone in the car has a set amount of time to make as many words as they can from the letters in the selected word. For example if there is a billboard about "Health Care" you choose the word "Health" and make words like "The, Heal, Let, Heat…" and the list goes on. Whoever makes the most words in 1 minute is the winner and the winner gets to choose the next billboard word to jumble.

  • Go Fish

Game Set Up - You'll need at least one deck of playing cards.

Game Play - A classic that kids of all ages still love to play. The object of Go Fish is the get rid of all your cards, the first one to do this is the winner. The game starts by giving each player a select number of cards, anywhere from 4 to 10 with 5 being the norm. The rest of the cards are placed in the middle. Starting with the person to the left of the dealer they'll ask a different player by name whether or not they have a certain card. You want to get 4 like cards, once you do you can lay them down which will reduce the amount of cards in your hand. For example if you have two –3s then you'll ask a player if they have any 3s. If that player has 3s they must give them to you. You continue asking players for cards until a player you ask for a card doesn't have a card you need. In that case the player being asked will tell you to "Go Fish". You then must take a card from the top of the deck sitting in the middle. The player who made you "Go Fish" now becomes the asker. Kids love this game, it's great for counting numbers and it's a good ice breaker game for kids of all ages.

  • Guess The Distance

Game Set Up - Pencil and paper to write down guesses.

Game Play - This game can start before you even leave the driveway. You write down the name of each player and then choose specific landmarks/cities in which you'll be going through and have each person guess how many miles you'll go before getting there. Also while on the road if you see something in the distance you can guess how far you'll go before you reach that thing. Or you can guess the distances between restaurants of the same kind. Make sure you have someone keeping track of the mileage and don't bother the driver, as they must keep their eyes on the road.

  • Initials Game

Game Set Up - Nothing is needed for this game

Game Play - There are various ways to play this game. For older kids and teens to adults you give out two initials. For example J.S. and each person needs to come up with a famous person with those initials. To make the game easier you can let players invert the initials also using J.S. or S.J. Each person only has an allotted amount of time or they're out of the game. JS – John Schneider / John Stamos / Jerry Stackhouse and on and on. Another version that is a little easier and silly for younger kids is that a question is asked and each player must answer the question using the initials in their name. For example: What's your favorite activity? If your initials are J.S. you could say "Jumping Stones". It's silly yes but if you answer right away an it makes sense then you're still in the game. Someone with the initials A.B. might say "Apple Bobbing". This is also a fun travel game.

  • License Plate Cross Country Road Trip

Game Set Up - Pencil, Paper and Road Atlas.

Game Play - This is a fun game but it does take time and it's usually good on a long trip especially if there is an incentive like a small prize or candy for whoever wins. Be the first person to cross the USA by finding license plates on cars/trucks of states that border each other. It doesn't matter if you're going from east to west or west to east, it may depend on which way you're traveling. For example if you're starting in California you'd want to find a Nevada License Plate then a Utah, Idaho or Wyoming License Plate to keep your travel going east. The first to reach the Atlantic Ocean is the winner.

  • License Plate Darts

Game Set Up - Nothing Needed.

Game Play - Played/Scored similar to the game of darts but you're looking at license plates instead of throwing darts at a dartboard. You can either count backwards to zero or go up to a specified number say 120-130 points. For example if you want to start from zero you need to have an ending score between 120-130 points as it's almost impossible to get on an exact number to win a game. You pick one car/truck/semi-truck at a time and whichever car you pick you get the first two numbers added together point total. For example if the plate is XYZ957, you'd get 9+5=14 points. It's more fun because you get double score for trucks so 14 points would now be 28 and triple score for semi-trucks which would be 42 points. Again to be the winner you must get between 120 and 130 points without going over. So if you only need say 5 points to win you won't want to choose a truck or semi-truck as your next dart you'd want to choose a car and go for the smallest points possible. You can get a bulls-eye too, if you get a license plate that starts with 00 that is worth 80 points. You can raise or lower point totals depending on your final score needed to win.

  • License Plates Fifty States

Game Set Up - Pencil and Paper.

Game Play - Be the first person to find all fifty states license plates while on the road or during your vacation and win this game. You could also write down the state mottos and after you're finished with all fifty states or whichever number you've found and have a state motto quiz. And for older kids you can ask them what the state capital is for each state found.

  • License Plate Poker

Game Set Up - Nothing needed except a basic knowledge of poker.

Game Play - A simple game, all you need to do is make the best hand you can out of license plates that you pass by. So instead of 5 cards being dealt to you, you can choose any two cars and use the plate numbers and letters to make the best hand you can. Each player gets to choose one car at a time in order. You use the letters on the plates to represent the face cards – A for Aces, K for Kings, Q for Queens, J for Jacks and a "0/zero" is used for 10s. Sometimes after everyone has their hand built it's fun to throw in a wild card. You choose the next truck you pass and the first letter or number on the plate that is a poker card is the wild card. So if the license plate on the truck is FVA095 the wild card would be "Aces" since there are no "F or V" cards in poker.

  • License Plate Spelling Bee

Game Set Up - Nothing needed except pencil and paper if you want to turn this fun game into a seriously fun game.

Game Play - Basically you take the letters you find in the first license plate you see and use them in as many words as you can within a specified time limit. For example if you see the license plate "EAC123" you could make the words "Race, Face, Mace…" and so on. The one who makes the most words in the time allotment is the winner.

    Fun Car Travel Games

  • What's The Temperature

Game Set Up - Nothing Needed.

Game Play - If you have a thermometer in your car you can turn it off until you're on your trip and then have each person guess the temperature after you're an hour into the trip. You could also write down the guesses before leaving too. Sometimes if you travel the same route many times you'll pass an outside thermometer and you can have players guess the temp before passing that thermometer.

  • Scavenger Hunt – "Travel"

Game Set Up - You need to make a list of the items to find and pass it out to each player in the car/plane before leaving on your trip.

Game Play - Be the first person to find all the items on the Scavenger Hunt list and win. If you're traveling in a car the things that you may want to have kids find could be (McDonalds Restaurant, Billboard With An Animal, Red Sign, Red Car, Blue Truck, An Animal In A Car, A License Plate With Blue In It…) and so on. You must be the first person to spot that item and tell everyone in the car otherwise you won't get the credit.

  • Where Am I?

Game Set Up - Nothing is really needed for this game although some people like to use pencil and paper to write down where they are so there isn't cheating.

Game Play - Basically this is the game 20 questions but players are trying to guess where you are instead of what you're thinking of. This can be a great educational game. For example you say that you're in one of the 50 states and now each person gets to ask you one yes or no question at at time trying to figure out which state you're in. If someone decided to take a guess as to where you're at and they're wrong then they're out of the game. Of course their "guess" does not count towards the 20 questions. If nobody can guess where you're at then you're the winner. Players would ask questions like: Are you in the north? Are there many lakes? And on and on it goes until somebody guesses where you're at.
