Indoor Games For Kids
Beetle BugGame Set Up - You'll need one or two dice plus pencils and paper for each player. Game Play - This is a really fun game for young kids and it's a game that older kids and adults can enjoy playing also. The rules are simple, be the first person to draw a beetle bug and you win the game. But in order to draw the beetle bug you must do the following: Each player will roll the die and MUST roll a 1 in order to start their beetle bug drawing. If a one is rolled then they can draw the body of a beetle bug. Until a one is rolled you cannot build any other beetle body parts. Once a 1 is rolled they can then roll a 3 for legs or a 6 for the tail/smile and continue to draw their beetle bug. You cannot add antennas or eyes, as you must first roll a 2 to draw the head. The first person to draw the whole beetle bug body wins. You can make the game longer or shorter by allowing only one leg to be drawn per 3 rolled or draw as many as you like for your bug on either the left or right side. Pretty much a roll of 6 can be anything, traditionally a tail is drawn but I've switched with a smile and kids like that also. 1 – Body, 2- head, 3 – one leg or all legs, 4 – one antenna, 5 – one eye, 6 – the tail or smile.
Blindfold Drawing GameGame Set Up - You'll need blindfolds for as many players as there are plus pencils and paper for each player. Or this game can be played in a dark room without blindfolds. Game Play - A fun game especially during vacation at the cottage or on a school trip. Basically one person is designated "storyteller" and the rest of the players must then blindfold themselves. The "Storyteller" will tell a short and descriptive story about anything they want pausing after inserting an object or person into the story and having the blindfolded players draw that object or person on their paper. It's usually best to have them draw no more than 10 things, 5 being best. For example a story could go something like this. Today the sun was shining. (each person draw a sun) So I decided to fly a kite (each person draw someone flying a kite) While flying the kite in the park I saw a big oak tree. (each person draw an oak tree) In the tree I saw a squirrel. (each person draw a squirrel) After the story is done everyone takes off their blindfolds and then votes on the best drawing. CharadesGame Set Up - You'll need a watch or hourglass and some pencils and paper for each player. Game Play - Most people have played Charades at least once in their lives but many "non-video" games are just being lost in the dust of technology. This is a game kids still love to play because of the imagination and actions/pantomimes involved. Basically the object of the game is for a team to guess what their team member is acting out. First you must decide what to act out, this is done by having all players write down a short/easy to act out word, words / thing. Next you take each suggestion and mix them up on a table or floor. If you're playing in teams then one person from a team will choose a word (lets say Dave) from the pile and then proceed to act out what is written on the paper. If Dave's team members can figure out what he's acting out then they get a point. The watch/hourglass is used to give Dave a limited amount of time (usually 1 to 3 minutes) to act his "sentence/word" out, this makes the game really fun. Of course Dave cannot speak at all. Sometimes for younger kids it's easier to let them tell their team what kind of thing they're acting out like a movie title or sporting event. Then they must indicate how many words are in the sentence/title by holding up that many fingers. Usually 2 or 3 words is long enough. There are a few hints that are regulars in this game for example: Sounds Like – You just cup your hand around your ear. Short Word – Put your thumb and index finger close together. Long Word – Pretend you're stretching a rubber band. Chopping Motion – Means your sentence/phrase is being divided into two or more words.
Go FishGame Set Up - You'll need at least one deck of playing cards. Game Play - A classic that kids of all ages still love to play. The object of Go Fish is the get rid of all your cards, the first one to do this is the winner. The game starts by giving each player a select number of cards, anywhere from 4 to 10 with 5 being the norm. The rest of the cards are placed in the middle. Starting with the person to the left of the dealer they'll ask a different player by name whether or not they have a certain card. You want to get 4 like cards, once you do you can lay them down which will reduce the amount of cards in your hand. For example if you have two –3s then you'll ask a player if they have any 3s. If that player has 3s they must give them to you. You continue asking players for cards until a player you ask for a card doesn't have a card you need. In that case the player being asked will tell you to "Go Fish". You then must take a card from the top of the deck sitting in the middle. The player who made you "Go Fish" now becomes the asker. Kids love this game, it's great for counting numbers and it's a good ice breaker game for kids of all ages. More Indoor Games For Kids
Hot Or ColdGame Set Up - Something small to hide like plastic fruit. Game Play - This is a game that has been around for years. Younger kids enjoy playing this game, especially when they find the hidden object right away. It's played by sending one person out of the room while the other players hide a selected object. After the object is hidden the player selected comes back into the room and must find the object. When the player is far away from the object everyone will say "You're Very Cold", as the player gets nearer to the object the temperature you say will get warmer starting with "Cold, Warm, Warmer, Hot, Burning". With "Burning" meaning your pretty much on top of the object, it's in front of your face. You can time each player and whoever has the fastest time in finding the object wins a prize or gets to hide the object for the next player. Household Scavenger HuntGame Set Up - You'll need a pen and paper to make a list of objects to find for each person/group. If it's done in a home it's fun to make players find one object in major rooms in the home like the kitchen, bathroom, living room, basement etc. This gets kids going up and down stairs and can be a pretty exciting game. Game Play - The first person/team to find all the objects on the scavenger hunt list is the winning player/team. You can make this a timed game and then the team with the most objects found is the winner within the allotted time period. For example 15 minutes. Adding time as a factor really makes the game fun for kids.

Initials GameGame Set Up - Nothing is needed for this game Game Play - There are various ways to play this game. For older kids and teens to adults you give out two initials. For example J.S. and each person needs to come up with a famous person with those initials. To make the game easier you can let players invert the initials also using J.S. or S.J. Each person only has an allotted amount of time or they're out of the game. JS – John Schneider / John Stamos / Jerry Stackhouse and on and on. Another version that is a little easier and silly for younger kids is that a question is asked and each player must answer the question using the initials in their name. For example: What's your favorite activity? If your initials are J.S. you could say "Jumping Stones". It's silly yes but if you answer right away and it makes sense then you're still in the game. Someone with the initials A.B. might say "Apple Bobbing". This is also a fun travel game.
Last Balloon StandingGame Set Up - You'll need medium to large balloons and some string. For this game you'll also need a decent amount of space. Large basements are great for this game. Game Play - You blow up the balloons and then tie one to each player's leg or one on each leg for double the chances of winning. When someone yells "Go" then each person tries to pop the others balloons by stepping on them. The person with the "Last Balloon Standing" is the winner.

Pass The Present GameGame Set Up - Small box with gift inside and at least 10 sheets of different colored wrapping paper or newspaper will work. Tape and a radio. Game Play - First someone wraps up the box in many layers of wrapping paper. Everyone sits in a circle with one person holding the present. Start the music and pass the present around. When the music is stopped the person holding the present opens one layer or wrapping paper. Then start the music again, you keep doing this until the last layer is unwrapped and whoever unwraps the last layer gets to keep the present inside. This game is fun for indoors with groups of kids of 4 or more and great for birthday parties and more.
Where Am I?Game Set Up - Nothing is really needed for this game although some people like to use pencil and paper to write down where they are so there isn't cheating. Game Play - Basically this is the game 20 questions but players are trying to guess where you are instead of what you're thinking of. This can be a great educational game. For example you say that you're in one of the 50 states and now each person gets to ask you one yes or no question at at time trying to figure out which state you're in. If someone decided to take a guess as to where you're at and they're wrong then they're out of the game. Of course their "guess" does not count towards the 20 questions. If nobody can guess where you're at then you're the winner. Players would ask questions like: Are you in the north? Are there many lakes? And on and on it goes until somebody guesses where you're at.
